MomentoGraphy: Portraits of East Londoners
“I love crocheting. It has helped me to go through difficult times of my life. When I am crocheting, I am free of worries, focused and happy.” – Kaniz
THE PROJECT
MomentoGraphy is a series of intimate portraits of East Londoners by Pierre Bureau. At home, in their studio or in a place dear to them they have opened their doors to share with us an activity that makes them feel good.
From time to time, we print postcards and write messages to strangers in East London. Our regular writing sessions are a great opportunity to meet each other and share stories.
The aim of MomentoGraphy is to create a virtuous circle during these difficult times, connecting people to their community while sharing the small things that make life invaluable.
You can support MomentoGraphy with a donation that will help us print our postcards and deliver them to local people in East London to improve mental health.
“Meditation has played a huge part in my life.
It has taught me how to feel alive, it has allowed me to find balance in all that I do.
Connecting with myself allows me to connect to the world around me and let’s me be a better version of myself everyday.” – Calvin
“Reading novels helped with my mental health, especially when I was immobile for several months, following a physical injury and rehabilitating at home.” – Sheila
“When my anxiety is high and my mood low, I lie in bed and allow my relationship with God to fill me with peace and stillness.
Into his hands I breath out my problems and fears.
With Him I am a child again, cared for, loved, protected and free of anguish and despair.” – Eileen
“Using Natural Earth colours has given a new dimension to my painting practice.
These earths feel alive in a different way.
Working with these colours in the 21st century feels like magic.” – Hente
“I decided to grow vegetables after a big change in my life this year sparked a huge period of transformation and growth for me and I wanted to try new things.
I went to volunteer on an urban farm to learn and reconnect with nature and, after I happened to discover some vegetable seeds at a car boot sale in Dalston, I soon decided to give it a go with my housemate in my own garden!
Watching them grow has been like a marker for my own journey of healing, as I planted them during a tough time and have been growing, with them, ever since. Every time I see them I’m reminded of how much I too have grown, and as they get stronger I am reminded that I do, too.
I have mixed feelings about what happens next – the final stage of their growth will be a happy moment for me and my transformation but I am of course sad to say the end of their journey means I’m going to have to eat them!” – Rory
