A Feast for the Eyes

What is A Feast for the Eyes?

A Feast for the Eyes is a free 8-week photography course where you’ll explore how to tell food stories with photography using the magic of a simple camera, your experiences, and the everyday world around you.

Every Friday from 7 January – 24 February 2022, we’ll spend 1.5 hours discovering food markets, community gardens and new recipes to celebrate the unique cultures of everyone joining us on the course through playful assignments, self-reflection and sharing our experiences.

The course will also be an opportunity to examine the journey of food from farm to plate, improve your wellbeing, and consider the environment. At the end of the course you’ll be invited to have your photos included in a local exhibition.

Take part in research

The photography course is part of a research project called Feast for the eyes: Using photography to explore peoples’ understandings of and relationships with food, by the University of Sussex in collaboration me, Pierre Bureau.

The project aims to understand more about peoples’ understanding of food within their local communities.

What does taking part involve?

Over the 8 weeks, you can expect to work with Pierre to take photographs each week, talk about your experiences of taking the photographs and listen to other people’s experiences.

You will learn skills in photography and play around with lighting, framing, colour and patterns that you see around you.

With your consent, discussions will be audio recorded and researchers will take notes on what you say and do. We will invite you to take part in a 1-hour interview or focus group once the workshops have finished. With your consent, we will exhibit a selection of your photographs.

We will explain the consent process when we meet and if you don’t want to sign up that’s OK. Please see this longer information sheet which gives you more details. We can answer any questions when we meet.

For more information about the course and what to expect, including how we will use and store your data and protect your privacy, please download the Participant Information Sheet (right-click and choose the “Save Link as…” option to download the pdf file).

Why take part?

By taking part in this study you are helping to expand knowledge on things that impact you in your life.

The research aims to understand how you feel about the food you eat, and how your understanding of food changes through taking photographs and learning from other people on the course.

All information collected about you will be kept strictly confidential and private.

The A Feast for the eyes project is also part of a larger research project  funded by UK Research and Innovation. The purpose of the larger project is to work with communities to understand and improve the food system in the UK. Find out more about the larger project here.
