The Sea Between Us

‘The Sea Between Us’ was a 7-week online mindful photography workshop that took place from March 2020 to June 2021 in East London.

Its aim was to support local people at the beginning of the pandemic by providing them with an opportunity to learn new skills and build resilience. The project was a collaboration with the Bromley-by-Bow Centre and was supported by the Mayor of London’s Culture Seeds program.

The project culminated with two Summer Exhibitions organised and curated by Rose Fraser and Pierre Bureau at the Bromley-by-Bow center.

The Sea Between Us Exhibition, July 2020

Since the start of the pandemic, many of us have felt isolated from one another, as if we were each an island cut off by a sea of uncertainty.

Our photography workshops aimed to create bridges between us. Participants learned new skills, connected with their community, and shared their personal stories through photography, texts, and conversations while making sense of the present.

Finally, after a long winter, we had a window of hope that allowed us to meet in person again. The exhibition at the community center not only bears witness to these unusual times but also celebrates life with joy.
